I wasn’t entirely sure what I was getting into with this book, but I’m glad I trusted it to take me along for the adventure. This book had three handsome, yet estranged brothers, a girl trying to move on with her life, and a town with too many secrets.
I was intrigued right off the bat by this plot. That could have to do with the fact that The Inheritance Games series just ended and I’m missing the whole ‘poor kid just inherited billions’ plot, but I’m okay with that. This book had a nice Cinderella moment, but it also had two flawed main characters trying to do whatever they could to take care of those around them. It had a bit of mystery and intrigue. And it had lots of romantic, spicy moments.
Austin and Carly’s relationship was really nice to begin this series with. I wouldn’t quite describe them as friends with benefits, but it was a beneficial relationship in the beginning. I did like that they were friends to lovers. I’ve been reading about so many broody men resisting the women they like so this was a nice change of pace. And Austin was just so likable that he made me root for him and Carly’s success.
I wish this book would have been longer because I felt like the book ended right when we were getting into the meat of the story and Austin and Carly’s relationship! That’s not an actual complaint I just didn’t want the story to end. It is nice that there is some mystery being carried over into the next book. I was left with lots of unanswered questions, but that just makes me excited for the next book!
Some dark topics were broached, but the book didn’t feel dark. The hope Carly had for her future and her desire to heal and move on, was inspiring. It gave the book a lighter mood despite everything being discussed.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and will be sticking around for book two. I can’t wait to learn more about the bad-boy brother from NYC!
